Community EV Strategy
The City of Kingston has an internal document that outlines the strategy to support electric vehicle (EV) uptake in Kingston, promoting the benefits of electric vehicles and readying the local electrical distribution network for EV charging demand.
Community GHG Reduction Targets
The Climate Leadership Plan, 2021 set a goal for the City to reduce community GHG emissions by 15% by 2022, 30% by 2030, and 100% by 2040.

Community Retrofit Program
City of Kingston community retrofitting program – Better Homes Kingston – is a local improvement charge (LIC) financing program to encourage homeowners to undertake deep-energy retrofits. Homeowners who participate in the program will qualify for up to $40,000 loans at 0 percent interest, with the option for an initial 30 percent upfront to pre-pay contractors for their services.

Complete Streets Policy

Green Roof Requirements in GDS / By-law
The City of Kingston does not have gren roof requirements but By-Law No. 8499: Green Roofs and Other Rooftop Elements, states: i. Architectural appurtenances to support green roofs, other rooftop sustainability elements, or rooftop amenity spaces shall be permitted to exceed the maximum allowable building height by up to 3.5 metres.

Net Zero Municipal Facilities Commitment/Standard
The Climate Leadership Plan Summary Report, 2021, sets the goal of all new construction or major renovations to be Net Zero Energy where feasible and provides direction to develop a Net Zero Energy 2040 strategy. Two projects are targeting net-zero carbon: Kingston East Community Center and Kingston Fire and Rescue Maintenance Center.

Urban Agriculture Plans
The City is currently working with the Climate Leadership Working Group (a body of community leaders tasked with providing input and peer review to inform City-wide implementation of the Climate Leadership Plan) to implement the Food and Forestry Actions identified in the Climate Leadership Plan.
